Puerto Chiapas: Izapa Ruins & Tapachula History

We bounced our way through lush jungle greenery to the Izapa Mayan Ruins—an ancient, quietly impressive site that dates back about 3,500 years. No towering pyramids here, just mossy platforms, carved stones, and the strong feeling that you should whisper out of respect (or superstition).

Bonus – we remembered to bring Aardi with us, so he got his moment posing with the Izapa sign.

Next stop: downtown Tapachula and a visit to the city’s government center, then a church, and finally the City Museum, where photos and artifacts gave us a quick crash course in local history—thankfully air-conditioned.

We wrapped things up with lively Maya dancers in bright costumes, proving that while the ruins are ancient, the culture is very much alive.

Jungle heat, ancient history, and dancing—another day well spent.
