Before embarking on our journey to Kenya, we stumbled upon an irresistible opportunity—a deal that turned an eight-hour layover in Qatar into a mini luxury getaway. For the same price as a single night back home, we secured two nights at a four-star hotel in Qatar. Needless to say, we couldn’t pass it up! Here’s how this unexpected stopover added a touch of indulgence to the start of our adventure.
August 31, 2024
Our arrival in Qatar was smooth and stress-free, thanks to a special service with Qatar Airlines that made navigating the airport a breeze. We were escorted to a lounge while they collected our luggage for us, and whisked through passport control with no lines in sight. When our ride wasn’t there to greet us, the staff even arranged transportation for us.
The only hiccup? Our cell service for our phones didn’t work, which made staying connected a bit challenging. But they were good for taking pictures around the area and on the cruise we took.
September 1
The next morning, we started later than usual and enjoyed breakfast at a nearby sister hotel, just a short stroll away. This was our first introduction to the infamous heat of Qatar—oppressive but bearable for now. After breakfast, we explored the local souk, only to discover that it closes around noon and reopens at 4:00 PM, a reminder of the rhythm of life in such a hot climate.
After a restful break at the hotel, we had lunch at a lovely restaurant called The Desert Rose, which lived up to its elegant name.
By 4:30, we were off to Bay Park to catch a traditional dhow for a sunset cruise. While the cruise was tranquil and scenic, we missed having any commentary or information about the sights around us. Still, it was a perfect way to relax after a busy day.
September 2
The next morning, we were up early for our flight back. Our driver dropped us off at the business class entrance, where a personal guide took over, escorting us to the stunning airport lounge. We enjoyed breakfast upstairs in the luxurious space before our guide returned to speed us through check-in and onto the plane with ease. A truly seamless experience from start to finish! Highly recommended!
